RAD Board
RAD Board - For Medical and Dental X Ray installations
RAD Board is a laminated panel of lead sheeting bonded to a carrier board to provide protection from x-ray radiation. RAD Board is specifically designed as an attractive, durable cladding with radiation protection properties which is ideal for medical or dental x-ray installations. It may be used as a lining or as a personnel protective screen (either fixed or free standing). RAD Board is manufactured under strict control and confirms with Quality Standards ISO 9001; 2000 standard. Its lead core will vary in density and size to suit Health Department Regulations. TYPES The extent of sheilding to be incorporated in the carrier will influence the choice of carrier board. A heavier lead will require a thicker (more rigid) board. Whether the RAD Board will be the finished face of the wall is also relevant. Common choices for the carrier are plasterboard, MDF or plywood. Single-sided panels or sandwich panels can be manufactured. Panels can either be supplied ready for painting or as a substrate to the final wall cladding. Modular sections are available and can be prefabricated in the factory to enable ease of installation on site. SIZES The lead component is usually expressed in kg/m2 and of values of 5, 10, 20, 25, 30, and thereafter in multiples of 10kg/m2. Panels sizes are up to 1200mm wide and 3600mm length, dependig on the carrier board. Plywood is generally only available up to 2400mm, whilst plasterboard and MDF can be 3600mm. Plasterboard in only suitable for lead of 5 or 10kg/m2 due to the strength of the carrier board. There is a correlation between the weights of the lead and the thickness of the plywood and MDF. The heavier the lead, the thicker the carrier board needs to be. WALL FINISHES MDF and plasterboard are economical carrier boards and provide a smooth surface ready for painting. An alternative is for plywood or MDF as the carrier board with the walls then over-sheeted with plasterboard. INSTALLATION Specialised fixing techniques, including joining strips, are necessary to ensure the integrity of the radiation barrier. This information can be provided on request.
